Porsche is introducing two new 911 Targa models that will be available at Porsche dealerships in the U.S. starting in September of this year.

The most striking visual highlight of the 911 Targa is its 16.58 square-foot glass roof made up of two segments - an elegant sliding roof at the front and a more practical tailgate at the rear. The roof slides smartly beneath the tailgate within seven seconds, conveniently offering almost five square feet of open space above the passenger cabin when opened completely.

The focal point of the Targa’s interior is the new Porsche Communication Management(PCM) 3.0 which features a touchscreen for simplified operation of the audio system as well as the optional hard-disk-drive navigation system.

Technological highlights of the 2009 Targa include two new engines, with direct fuel injection to improve both performance and fuel economy; the seamlessly-shifting PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or double-clutch gearbox, replacing the optional Tiptronic S automatic transmission; and the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management(PTM), which takes the place of the former all-wheel drive system.

The 911 Targa 4 is powered by a new 3.6 liter flat-six engine, developing a maximum output of 345 horsepower for a top track speed of 176 mph. The 3.8 liter 911 Targa 4S engine delivers a maximum output of 385 horsepower that accelerates this exclusive sports car to a top track speed of 184 mph.

Other important additions to PCM 3.0 are the new options of XM satellite radio with XM NavTraffic capability, Bluetooth connectivity, iPod port, USB port and auxiliary jack.

The 2009 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S will be available in the United States in October at a MSRP of $89,500 and $100,100 respectively.

Depending on the model, the new all-wheel-drive Carrera offers up to 8.5 per cent more power, up to 12.9 per cent more fuel economy, and 15.4 per cent lower CO2 emissions. Specifically, output of the 3.6-litre power unit is up by 20 to 345 bhp. At the same time a Carrera 4 Coupé with PDK, to take just one example, consumes a mere 10.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, equal to 28.0 mpg imp. The improvements on the 911 Carrera 4S with its 3.8-litre power unit are equally significant, with maximum output up by 30 to 385 bhp on overall fuel consumption down in the case of Carrera 4S Cabriolet with PDK to 10.7 litres/100 km, equal to 26.4 mpg imp.

The new generation of the 911 model series stands out clearly through the discreet but striking modification of the front end and new lights technology. The new Carrera models come in all cases with bi-xenon headlights and new LED daytime driving lights.

The newly designed rear light clusters also feature LED technology and for the first time Porsche offers Dynamic Bending Lights as an option. It almost goes without saying that all Carrera 4 models come as before with their muscular rear end 44 millimetres or 1.73-inch wider than on the two-wheel-drive versions. And a new reflector trim bar between the LED rear lights gives the typical rear end of the car even more dynamic character.

Engineer Craig Wildman, project coordinator, said: “At this point the project has reached the stage in the assembly of data while vehicului runs. We can register absolutely happens with any electric system, changing the parameters of operation and testam again, in order to obtain a more secure technologies and how best “.
Professor Yang Shao-Horn, head of the project revealed that the main goal pursued by MIT is getting a propulsion system elctrica, efficient and ever. “Studiem more materials in the laboratory to find the ideal composition for batteries and more sustainable energy with a larger,” said the teacher institute in Massachusetts.

Porsche Traveller Concept: Luckily, It’s Not Official

Porsche Traveller Concept: Luckily,

A compact crossover model from Porsche wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. What would be bad is if someone at Porsche happened to see Ivan Volkov’s Traveller Concept and liked the design. The independent designer makes a fuzzy referral of a two-part construction in his website, something that can be seen in the sketches after the jump. However, it’s unclear how or where the third set of wheels is hiding.
