Plans to Eliminate Fossil Fuels from Car Lineup by 2015

Monday, June 30th, 2008

mercedes-f700-car-j01.jpg

Reports are swirling the Mercedes has plans to switch its entire car fleet over to alternate fuels by 2015. At first blush that sounds impossible, although when you realize that they are throwing in biofuel and hybrid cars along with the more radical electric and hydrogen options, it becomes clear that biodiesel is their real backup plan. The key point being that any engine designed for biodiesel, will also run just fine on fossil fuel based pump diesel.

While the rest of the world has already figured out the benefits of diesel, this would be a much more difficult transition in the US, where it seems they are still firing salvos in the horsepower race with arch rivals Audi and BMW. Perhaps $4+ gas is finally making people reconsider their priorities.

The other problem with this story is that the original source appears to be The Sun, which is kind of like Britain’s answer to the New York Post. So I’m not sure how literally we can take the claims.

 g-class_changes_09.jpg

The Mercedes G-Class is like the tux and tails — its remains in vogue no matter what’s happening in the world around it. And like the tux, it looks pretty much like it did when it first arrived, and changes to it still don’t come quickly.

For the ‘09 model, the G has been given Mercedes’ new corporate face, so you can better associate it with that CL65 you’ve got parked next to it in the garage. The big news, though, is in the engine bay. The base V8 engine gets a whopping 90-horsepower bump from 292 to 382. Torque also gets seriously goosed from 336 ft-lb to 391. The boosted V8 and the AMG G55 get a much more modest boost of 7 horsepower for an even 500.

 2009 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic

Mercedes-Benz is loading on the tech, making its 4Matic all-wheel-drive system standard equipment for the 2009 CL550. The system, which debuted in 2007 in the S-Class sedan, splits torque 45/55 front/rear via a limited-slip center differential within the car’s transmission housing.

In addition to getting 4Matic, the CL550 trades in its Airmatic suspension for Mercedes’ sophisticated Active Body Control system. The car also gets standard heated and ventilated front seats and keyless ignition, but Mercedes says that even with all of the added equipment, the price should remain near its current level, which sits close to $105,000.

The rest of the lineup, including the V12-powered CL600, CL63 and CL65 AMG models, continues as rear-drivers with the Airmatic suspension. All 2009 CLs go on sale this summer.
