Ford to show Focus RS in London

Monday, July 7th, 2008

A Focus RS will be shown July 22 at the London motor show. It’s in the final stages of development, but the British show car will be close to the product that goes on sale overseas in early 2009.

The United States will get the European Focus in late 2010, and it will likely be built at two plants here. A spokesman wouldn’t say if we’ll be getting the RS model.

This will be the second Focus to wear the RS badge, and first since 2002. The show car will be clad in lime green livery, meant to evoke the color of the 1970s Le Mans Escort RS1600.Power comes from a 2.5-liter Duratec five-cylinder that makes about 296 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque. It’s expected to be able to go from 0 to 62 mph in less than 6 seconds.Inside, the racing theme continues with Recaro sports seats, aluminum pedals, a three-spoke steering wheel and metallic highlights on the air vents and door handles.

Ford engineers considered all-wheel drive for the car, but decided to keep it front wheel and incorporated a number of improvements for traction and steering. The front suspension is what the company calls “RevoKnuckle,” and expected to reduce steering disturbance and torque impact. It’s paired with a limited-slip differential developed by Ford’s German research center specifically for the Focus RS.

The Ford F-150 pickup truck has been dethroned as America’s favorite vehicle for the first time since 1991–by at least two cars.According to preliminary sales figures released by automakers, Ford Motor Co. sold 42,973 F-series trucks in May, while Toyota Motor Corp. sold 52,826 Corollas and 51,291 Camrys.

The last time a car outsold the F series was October 1991.

Jim Farley, Ford group vice president for marketing and communications, said the F-series loss to Toyota’s cars was a “significant development.”

“But it’s not surprising, given the fuel price,” Farley said. “That’s just a sign of the times. I think May has been a watershed month.”

Toyota said Corolla sales rose 12.4 percent in May, but were down 9.5 percent for the first five months compared with the same period a year ago. Camry sales have been flat.

The U.S. market’s hatchback stigma might be weakening–Ford will sell a hatchback version of its forthcoming Fiesta small car here, the automaker said today.

The new Fiesta, in hatchback and sedan body styles, will go on sale in 2010 in the United States, Ford said. The European versions of the Fiesta, three- and five-door hatchbacks, were unveiled at the Geneva motor show in March and go on sale later this year. The United States will get both three- and five-door hatchbacks, a Ford official in Mexico told Automotive News. Ford spokespeople in the United States would not say with hatchback–the three-door, five-door or both–would be sold in this market.

Just over a year after its introduction at the 2007 Detroit Show, Ford went ahead and tweaked the Coupe version of the 2008 Focus (there are no changes to the sedan version) in response to the wide criticism over the car’s mismatched looks.

Exterior updates include a revised grille, new round fog lights up front, darkened chrome accents around the headlamps, and new 17-inch alloys for the SES version along with the deletion of the trunk mounted rear spoiler and the faux side vents –thank God. However, despite these changes the 2009 Focus Coupe remains in our opinion as one of the fugliest compact cars around.
