ferrari-flames11.jpg

Ferraris are best known for their looks, performance, and exclusivity, but lately, it seems one could add flammability to that list of attributes. The latest case of Ferrari flambé involves a beautiful black 599 GTB Fiorano, which self-ignited at a stop light while being driven by someone who wasn’t even the car’s owner. Martin Bullen, who works at supercar garage Romans International in Banstead, UK, was at the wheel when he heard a strange sound followed by a brilliant display of smoke and fire. The £250,000 exotic was a total loss, and the 28-year-veteran of the high-end garage had to inform his boss of the Ferrari’s fate.

Luckily for Bullen, his employer is a forgiving and understanding man. Garage owner Paul Jaconelli said he wouldn’t hold the destroyed 599 against his employee, and that the vehicle was still covered under warranty. That’s good news for Bullen, but Ferrari owners the world over must be wondering if their expensive toys will be the next to join the ranks of the carbequed. This isn’t exactly what they bargained for when they decided to get a hot car.

Fake Ferraris Busted by Italian Tax Police

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

frrp_1.jpgThe Italian Tax Police or as they call it in Italy, the “Guardia di Finanza”, raided a series of auto-body shops that where building fake Ferraris across the country. Most of you would probably call these vehicles kit cars or replicas, but according to the law in Italy and elsewhere, they are considered as counterfeits.

frrp_2.jpg

According to reports, the auto-body shops operated in a dozen cities from near the Alps in the north to Sicily in the south. The Italian Tax police managed to round up seven completed fake Ferraris, as well as another seven unfinished projects. Most of the replicas where based on the mid-engined Pontiac Fiero. A total of eight people were placed under investigation, but no arrests were made.

Harley Lewin, a partner with New York law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, who specializes in counterfeit issues but wasn’t involved in this case, told WSJ that even a handful of counterfeit Ferraris could harm the company’s image. “It starts to taint the brand,” he said. “It becomes a big deal; all of the sudden legitimate products start to lose their color, their appeal. The fake cheapen and diminish the real thing.”

Ultra Rare 1964 Ferrari 250 LM

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

ferrari_250lm_0.jpg

One of the star cars at this weekends “Ferrari Leggenda e Passione” auction in Maranello, Italy that’s organized by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby is the grand prix winning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM. Designed by Pininfarina, with coachwork by Scaglietti, this particular example was the fourth of only thirty-two 250 LMs built. The highlight of its extensive racing history occurred in 1965 when driven by Jochen Rindt, it claimed first place at the Austrian Grand Prix.

In September 1969, the car was shipped to Boston, Massachusetts in the US and later –surprise, surprise- it was converted for road use! Its owner cover the dashboard with leather, replaced the sliding windows with wind-up windows, while he also added seat belts and carpets.

The car changed numerous owners, during which it was, at one stage, a common sight on New York freeways, being used by its then owner for regular commutes into the city.

The 250 LM’s last stop occurred in 2002 when it was bought by its current owner who comprehensively restored the car. According to RM Auctions, the Ferrari 250 LM is expected to fetch around €4,200,000 - €4,800,000 which is about $6,500,000 - $7,500,000. Guess we won’t be seeing this one on the road again.
